There is great joy in the simple, seasonal, creative aspects of the everyday.
Over the years I've happily shared with my newspaper, magazine and book readers what's cooking in the kitchen and in my life, often with a hefty dollop of humor. To me, homekeeping is an art form - a way of making each day an expression of love and beauty. Come along and enjoy with me the seasonal and celebratory aspects of food and family, gardening, chicken keeping, homekeeping, and nature.
Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all. ~ Harriet Van Horne
Welcome to My Kitchen
I enjoy the many aspects of cooking - trying new recipes, tweaking old ones, the planning, the careful pairing of colors, seasonings and textures, the stirring and mixing, and finally the reveal. Setting a welcoming table for family and friends is a joy.
I learned how to cook from my mother. It was a seamless, ongoing process. Rarely did she say "I'm going to teach you how to make this." I learned by watching and helping, sometimes voluntarily. When she passed away, it became my job to get supper on the table. I've been doing it ever since.
It's not a chore (most days) to spend time in the room that truly is the center of our home. Years of writing a food column have honed my skills - but there is always something new to learn. I'm not a gourmet - I'm like you - just a good cook.
It's with great pleasure that commencing with the 2018 January/February issue of Good Old Days Magazine, a publication by Annie's, I am the new food writer!
What I'm Working On
Whether it's food crafting and gifting, drawing and painting, needlework, gardening, roofing a chicken coop, tramping around outside enjoying nature and wildlife, or remodeling two houses in less than two years, I am never bored!
What's On My Mind?
I spent a couple of decades as a journalist and during that time I shared my thoughts and observations on the seasons, gardening and the natural world, plus commentary on the events and experiences that spun off the merry-go-round of our lives. In my blog enjoy more of what loyal readers have enjoyed for years.
